Seeing an Identity

At Age Twenty-Seven.  16"h X 14"w.  Charcoal pencil on paper.
In portraiture, an artist has to aim beyond rendering a physical likeness of the sitter's features.  A likeness of the subject on the inside:  intelligence, personality and temper- ament, and even the subject's personal history, if captured, will make the portrait come alive.  These pictures, in part, are a diary of formative years - produced while the artist mastered technique and his identity as a painter was taking shape beyond the lessons in studio critiques.
